Departure from USU
All civilian, military and contractor members who depart from USU must visit the USU Security Office with a valid sign-out form. The departing members will be responsible for the following:
- Turn in ID Badge. Civilian and contractor employees need to remove DOD decals from their vehicle(s), and provide removal evidence to Security personnel.
- Car-pool members must turn in car-pool identifier.
- Members with security clearances must complete a non-disclosure form.
- Issued keys must be returned to dept/activity key custodians.
Emergency Evacuations
In case of an emergency, when an alarm sounds, all building occupants should proceed to their designated evacuation sites in a safe and orderly manner. Monitors are assigned to each floor of each building to assist USU members in evacuating the buildings.
Freezers/Incubators
When freezers/incubators that are inspected during secure hours by security guard personnel are turned off, moved (even within a laboratory), replaced, or sent to medical maintenance for repair, the USU Security Division must be notified by the individual researcher in advance of these actions. Two methods are available for this notification: (1) send a memo to the Security Office, or (2) send an E-mail message to Margaret White at In order to ensure that the proper personnel are contacted, departments/activities should update each list of names on freezers/incubators to ensure that the names and telephone numbers are current. Please be aware that if a security guard contacts a researcher in the middle of the night, that guard is simply following procedures established to safeguard research material. Additional freezer/incubator contact sheets are available in the USU Security Office, Building A, UP001.
Personal Items
All personal items of value must be secured. Normally, theft is not a problem at USU; however, in the past few years there have been instances of credit card thefts, and stolen wallets. The credit cards and wallets were stolen from book bags left unattended. Maintain sensible security precautions, and do not allow personal items to remain unattended.
Security Containers
- All security containers used to store controlled substances, funds, classified materials, weapons, medical items, precious metals or other items susceptible to theft must be numbered and designated as authorized storage containers by the USU Security Office.
- Requests for changing combinations must be submitted to the Security Office. Combinations will be changed when a security container is placed in use; whenever an individual knowing the combination no longer requires access; when the combination has been subject to compromise; when there is a change of substance control custodians; at least every two years; or when taken out of service.
- Form SF 700 "Security Container Information" will be used to identify personnel who have knowledge of the contents of containers. Part 1 of the form will be positioned on the inside of each container. Part 2 and 2A will be on file in the Security Office.
- Form SF 702 "Security Container Check Sheet" will be annotated whenever the container is opened or closed, and at the end of each work day to ensure the container is properly secured. SF 702 will be posted in a conspicuous area on the outside of the container. Users will ensure the SF 702 is posted the first duty day of each month and must maintain it for a 90 day period (the SF 702 is subject to inspection by the Security Division). The SF 702 must have a daily entry, even if not opened and must have a end of day entry. It is no longer necessary to send completed SF 702 forms to the Security Office.
- When notified that a security container has been left unattended, one of the users responsible for the container will be required to check the contents of the container for indications of tampering or removal of materials, which may require an inventory of the contents. These procedures apply at all times, during both duty and non-duty hours.
Traffic
The WRNMMC base speed limit is 20 MPH. The speed limit in the USU garage is 5 MPH, and headlights must be turned on when entering and exiting the garage.
