Our laboratory investigates the health effects of embedded metal fragments, including those metals found in military munitions (e.g., depleted uranium, tungsten alloys) and radiological dispersal devices (e.g., strontium, cobalt, iridium). We are interested in the mechanistic pathways of cellular damage as a result of metal exposure and hope to use this information to develop improved treatment procedures. In addition, we are also investigating the use of urinary biomarkers as a rapid noninvasive screening method to assess radiation exposure and dose.
