Research Division
Mission
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology:
- Instructs medical students in the principles of clinical obstetrics and gynecology in the classroom in the preclinical years and in the ambulatory and inpatient care settings in the clinical years;
- Participates in the preclinical instruction programs of the basic science departments and in interdepartmental courses, promoting the principles of women's health in general and obstetrics and gynecology in particular;
- Provides guidance and leadership for medical student interest groups, honor societies, and other student-led academic programs;
- Participates as a sponsor of the National Capital Uniformed Services Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program, and the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Program; Female Pelvic Medicine and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program;
- Provides direct faculty participation and support to the day-to-day instruction of residents and on-site clinical care at the teaching hospitals in the capital area;
- Responds to Department of Defense initiatives and departmentally identified academic needs in developing and presenting University sponsored continuing education courses for physicians and other health care providers in military and Public Health Service clinical practice settings;
- Develops and conducts laboratory and clinical research in the areas of gynecologic oncology and pathology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal fetal medicine, and health care delivery systems;
- Provides structured instructional opportunity in basic laboratory research for interested medical students, residents, and fellows.
