Brain Abnormalities in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Severe Depression

Dr. Torrey is Co-Director (with Dr. Maree Webster) of the Stanley Brain Research Laboratory in Gaithersburg, MD. This laboratory is the repository of one of the largest brain collections in the world, now numbering over 600 specimens, for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and severe depression along with normal control brains. In addition to being used for ongoing research projects in this laboratory, over 200,000 sections and blocks of tissue from this collection have been provided without charge to other research laboratories worldwide.

Research projects underway in this laboratory include studies of viruses and other infectious agents and neuroimmunological markers in these diseases. These include studies of retroviruses, herpesviruses and toxoplasma as well as studies of various cytokines. Some of these studies are done in collaboration with the Stanley Laboratory of Developmental Neurovirology at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.
