Research and Teaching

Research Topics: Dr. Singer is interested in applications of social and environmental psychology to health and illness and social problems; human performance enhancement; psychological factors in perceived control with emphasis on noise, compound stressors, automobile traffic; scaling environmental quality; psychological and physiological stress. As Professor Emeritus, he currently is involved in teaching only.
 
Methods and Approach: Laboratory-based experiments; field studies; behavioral, cognitive, and biological measures.

Medical Student Teaching: Llectures on decision-making in health-care settings.
 
Graduate Student Teaching: Graduate courses in Applied Multiple-Regression Correlation; History and Systems of Psychology.
 
Mentoring: Dr. Singer is Professor Emeritus and no longer supervises students, but is available for occassional consultations. In the past, Dr. Singer has supervised Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty in Medical & Clinical Psychology.

Professional Activities

Dr. Singer is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and the Association for Psychological Science. He was a member and chair of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Committee on the Enhancement of Human Performance, Executive Director of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, Editor-in-Chief of Basic and Applied Social Psychology, Associate Editor of Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and editor of many books on environmental psychology, health psychology, and behavioral medicine. Dr. Singer was the founder (1976) and Chair of the Medical & Clinical Psychology Department (1976 - 1999).
 
Selected Awards: American Association for the Advancement of Science Research Monograph Award, American Psychological Association’s Outstanding Contributions to Health Psychology, USUHS Award for Distinguished Service and Outstanding Contributions. PhD Honoris Causa from the University of Stockholm.
