Welcome to the Medical and Clinical Psychology (MPS) Department at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU)
Since its inception in 1978, the faculty, students, and research staff at our department have studied the role of behavior, cognition, and motivation in physical and mental health. Our department offers the following degrees: (1) Ph.D. in Medical Psychology [open to civilian and military students] that focuses on biobehavioral research, (2) Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology [military students] that focuses on clinical practice and research relevant to military populations, dependents, and veterans, and (3) Ph.D. in Medical and Clinical Psychology [open to civilian students] that focuses on biobehavioral research and evidence-based clinical research and practice.
News and Events
Dr. Michael Feuerstein was recently appointed to serve on the Systems Policy & Practice: Clinical Survivorship Care Workgroup of the National Cancer Survivorship Resource Center (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Cancer Society, George Washington University Cancer Institute). The objective of this national effort is to facilitate the improvement of quality health care for cancer survivors.
Dr. Michael Feuerstein is the recipient of the USU 2011 James Leonard Excellence in Clinical Research Award for his paper entitled, "Measures of Cognitive Function and Work in Occupationally Active Breast Cancer Survivors," (J Occup Environ Med., 2010). Dr. Feuerstein and his research team have pursued research related to factors associated with occupational outcomes in individuals living with the aftermath of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Michael Feuerstein, PhD, MPH , Professor in the Departments of Medical & Clinical Psychology and Preventive Medicine/Biometrics recently had his award-winning book for cancer survivors, The Cancer Survivor's Guide: The Essential Handbook to Life After Cancer translated and published in Chinese. This translation was requested by cancer survivors in East Asia who are increasing in numbers and recognize the importance of survivor self management of health, health care, function and well being as an important aspect of life as a cancer survivor.
Dr. Marian Tanofsky-Kraff has been elected President of the Eating Disorders Research Society for 2012-2013.
Dr. Marjan Holloway, Assistant Professor of Medical and Clinical Psychology, served as a member of the Department of Defense Task Force on the Prevention of Suicide by Members of the Armed Forces, and co-authored the influential report presented by this group. This important report has received a considerable amount of national visibility, and will have a major effect on the prevention of suicide in the U.S. Military.
Neil E. Grunberg, Ph.D., has been elected to full membership in Sigma Xi, the international honor society of research scientists dedicated to excellence in scientific research and cooperation among scientists in all fields. Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 with the motto Spoudon xynones, or "Companions in Zealous Research." Scientists and engineers are elected to Sigma Xi based on their research achievements.
