Research Topics: Dr. Ettenhofer's Laboratory for Neurocognitive Research studies brain-behavior relationships after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our long-term goal is to identify factors underlying successful vs. unsuccessful recovery after TBI and to aid in the development of targeted treatments. Current areas of emphasis include: psychiatric and neuroimaging predictors of chronic post-concussive symptoms; assessment and remediation of driving abilities after TBI; and development of robust eye-tracking indicators of neurocognitive status that may discriminate between TBI and other comorbid conditions. Primary study populations include military personnel with TBI related to combat as well as civilians suffering from TBI related to sports and accidental injuries. Previously, Dr. Ettenhofer has also conducted research examining neurocognition, neuroimaging, and functional abilities in HIV/AIDS, aging/dementia, and adult ADHD.
Methods and Approach:
- Neuropsychological assessment (e.g., clinical interview, examiner- and computer-administered cognitive tests, and self-report measures of neurobehavioral symptoms).
- Assessment and rehabilitation of driving abilities using virtual reality simulation.
- Neuroimaging (i.e., MRI, DTI, fMRI).
- Eye tracking/gaze analysis using an ASL D6-HS 240Hz video-based desktop eye tracker.
Medical Student Teaching: Lectures on Psychological Assessment, Neuropsychological Assessment, and Traumatic Brain Injury.
Graduate Student Teaching: Research Methods I (MPO901) and Neuropsychology (MPO533).
Mentoring: Dr. Ettenhofer currently mentors 3 psychology graduate students in research, and 4 psychology graduate students in clinical training.
