Research and Teaching

Research Topics: Dr. Cary is interested in studying the use of social media in graduate & medical education to teach clinical competencies in health literacy/leadership. Sim Center photo, people talking, decorativeGraduate Student Teaching: Clinical Skills is the foundational clinical course that enables low-risk practice of core competencies in conducting empirically-validated treatments & clinical supervision. Over a year, students 'treat' simulated patients (i.e., actors) with comorbid medical & psychological disorders, compounded by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Each encounter is digitally recorded at the National Capital Area Medical Simulation Center http://simcen.usuhs.mil/ and students receive 360' supervision, individually & in a group. Faculty, Fellows, and Teaching Assistants rate encounters for competence and adherence to treatments, while Simulated Patients rate relationship skills and the therapeutic alliance. More details about this state-of-the-art course.
