Research and Teaching

Research Topics: Dr. Bowles is interested in stress resilience, quality of life, selection, leadership, coaching and teams, well-being in the work place, weight reduction and physical fitness particularly among uniformed personnel.
 
Methods and Approach: field studies with human participants; behavioral, cognitive, personality, resilience and well-being measures.
 
Current Grant Support: Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Military Amputee Research Program.
 
Medical Student Teaching: Introduction to Clinical Medicine I
 
Graduate Student Teaching: graduate courses in Military Psychology II and History and Systems (lecture in sports psychology).
 
Mentoring: Dr. Bowles supervises Clinical Psychology graduate students in research and clinical work. He currently is training one student in his laboratory. He also mentors uniformed graduate students and junior officers with regard to professional development.

Selected Professional Activities

Selected Professional Activities: Dr. Bowles is a currently serving as a member on the board of the American Board of Professional Psychology in clinical health psychology and the District of Columbia Psychology Association. Among his military assignments, he was National Capital Region Psychology Consultant, Interim Chief and Deputy Chief of Psychology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Command Psychologist for the US Army Recruiting Command, Chief of Behavioral Medicine in Psychology at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Chief of Psychology for the 1st Infantry Division, Chief of the Human Factors Branch at the US Army School of Aviation Medicine, Command Psychologist on an Operation Iraqi Freedom Task Force. He also maintains a website to assist uniformed personnel and their families with post-deployment resources, including issues relevant to mental health, physical health, and everyday life.
 
Selected Awards and Honors: He has been awarded the Army Surgeon General "A" proficiency designator for his contributions as a health care professional in the military. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology and he is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in clinical health psychology.
