Behavioral Medicine and Cardiovascular Research Training

The Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology, in collaboration with faculty from USUHS Departments of Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Military Medicine and Howard University Department of Medicine offer an NHLBI funded training program in Behavioral Medicine and Cardiovascular Research for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows. The focal point of the program is the basic and/or clinical research training of pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows around two programmatic themes: Behavioral Risk Factors and Cardiac Pathophysiology and Behavior. The training program also offers research opportunities in the area of minority health disparities. This program provides trainees with a strong background in basic biobehavioral methods and laboratory techniques, as well as in clinical behavioral medicine applications and interventions.

Pre-doctoral Program

The pre-doctoral training program leads to the Ph.D. degree in Medical and Clinical Psychology. The specific goals of the pre-doctoral training program are: To provide trainees with a strong background in the content and methods of psychology and health psychology, research methods, and statistics, as well as the responsible conduct of research; to provide coursework training in epidemiology, basic physiology and pharmacology, and psychophysiological assessment relevant to cardiovascular disease risk factors and pathophysiology; and to provide independent investigators in the area of biobehavioral aspects of cardiovascular disorders using a mentorship model and directed research experiences, in an environment, that is sensitive to cultural diversity.

How to apply: Applicants should forward a cover letter indicating their interest in receiving Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine Training. In addition, applicants for this pre-doctoral program should follow the procedures for applying to the Medical Psychology graduate program.

Post-doctoral Program:

The Post-doctoral research training Program is for individuals who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or a comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution. Research training at the postdoctoral level emphasizes specialized training and research mentorship designed to provide training for fellows in four following areas: Behavioral and biomedical research training relevant to cardiovascular disease; Cardiac physiology; Research of ethnic minority health disparities and minority population; and Cardiovascular Behavioral medicine.

How to apply: Applicants for the Post-doctoral Program should prepare a letter stating:
