Faculty Biography
CDR René Hernández, MSC, USN
Commander René Hernández has been a Research Physiologist in the United States Navy for the past 16 years, after earning a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, and has become an expert in hyperbaric neurophysiology. She has published papers in the areas of hyperbaric oxygen toxicity and calcium channel behavior in response to ionizing radiation. CDR Hernández made significant contributions to the health and fitness of Navy personnel by researching, writing and implementing the Navy Instruction (OPNAVINST 6110.1E) on physical fitness testing. Prior to joining the Navy, she was a research technician aboard the NOAA Ship Oceanographer and one of the first women NOAA Divers. In March 2004 CDR Hernández was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame. She currently teaches Military Applied Physiology to MS1 students in addition to her research endeavors.
