MEMORANDUM FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
 
SUBJECT: Establishment, Composition and Functions of the Research Committee
 
A. PURPOSE: To establish, define composition and functions for a Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) Research Committee with the responsibility for the oversight of all research activities within GSN.
 
B. REFERENCES:
 
USUHS Instruction 3200, Research and Clinical Investigation, dated 30 September 1997
USUHS GSN Scholarly Project Manual, 7th edition, dated Fall, 2000
 
C. APPLICABILITY: This Policy applies to all students and faculty of the GSN.
 
D. POLICY:
 
1. To provide oversight of all student scholarly projects relative to feasibility, scope of science, use of resources, significance, rigor and scientific integrity; and to advise the Scholarly Project Committee Chair regarding the same.
2. To review faculty research proposals prior to submission for funding or submission for IRB consideration.
3. To consider student requests for exemption from GSN scholarly project requirements and to provide recommendations to the student's Program Director/Department Chair.
4. To promote GSN research, to include topic selection, funding sources and mentoring.
 
E. COMMITTEE COMPOSITION:
 
The committee shall be composed of doctorally prepared faculty from all departments. Additionally, master's prepared faculty may sit on the committee if nominated by their department chair. The Research Committee Chair shall be the Department of Nursing Research Chair.
 
F. COMMUNICATION/DOCUMENTATION:
 
Minutes will be taken, distributed, and maintained by the Department of Nursing Research. Copies of minutes will be distributed to the Dean's Office, and to each Research Committee member. Feedback to students, student scholarly project chairs, and faculty principal investigators will be provided as a memo from the committee.
 
G. EFFECTIVE DATE: This policy is effective immediately and will be reviewed annually.
