MEMORANDUM FOR FACULTY AND STAFF
SUBJECT: Establishment of Faculty Awards Program
The Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) Faculty Awards Program is established as defined below.
A. Purpose
The faculty awards program recognizes the achievements of individual faculty members with the selection of one uniformed and one civilian faculty member for acknowledgment. The policy provides definitions, information about responsibilities and time-sensitive procedures, and establishes the Faculty Awards Committee. USUHS and the GSN recognize teaching achievement and excellence demonstrated by nursing faculty members in the graduate programs.
B. Applicability
This Policy applies to all GSN faculty, students, and administrators responsible for conducting annual graduation and related awards ceremonies.
C. Definitions
1. Faculty Awards Committee. The GSN committee that has the responsibility to administer the Faculty Awards Program. Student members will be recommended by the Commandant and program directors, and appointed by the Dean.
2. Graduation Ceremony. The annual ceremony during May for conferring University degrees and for presenting graduation awards, including faculty awards. The Office of Brigade Commander is the Office of primary responsibility for this ceremony.
3. Outstanding Uniformed Faculty Member Award. An award given to the GSN uniformed faculty member demonstrating high levels of excellence while simultaneously providing outstanding leadership qualities.
4. Outstanding Civilian Faculty Member Award. An award given to the GSN civilian faculty member demonstrating high levels of excellence while simultaneously providing outstanding leadership qualities.
5. "Hooder". A faculty member selected by the Faculty Awards Committee to assistant the Program Director in the "hooding" of graduates at the Graduation ceremony.
D. Faculty Awards Committee
1. The GSN Faculty Awards Committee is composed of one first year and two second year students from each GSN program. These members will be selected by the program representatives and the class presidents. The faculty advisor will be the Executive Assistant.
2. The Committee's purpose is to execute the faculty awards program as outlined in this policy statement. The primary function is to nominate award recipients to the Dean for approval.
3. The Committee shall elect a chair from among the members and establish such rules as are necessary to operate.
4. Nominations for faculty awards will be requested from the student body.
5. The Committee shall consider the nominations for faculty awards and forward its recommendations to the Dean not later than 1 March.
E. Policies
All faculty members are eligible for either the Uniformed or Civilian award with the exception that once a faculty member has been selected as either the Uniformed or Civilian Outstanding Faculty Member, that individual is not eligible for the award for three years.
F. Responsibilities
1. Dean. The Dean shall have overall responsibility for the awards program and appoint the Faculty Awards Committee based upon nominations from the student class presidents. The Dean shall be the approval authority for all award nominations.
2. The Chair, Faculty Awards Committee, and the faculty advisor shall ensure that the awards policy as outlined is appropriately executed.
