The Biomedical Instrumentation Center
- Manages the use, maintenance, upgrading, and replacement of multi-user state-of-the-art equipment
- Conducts self-initiated research projects and serves as consultants and co-investigators on research projects initiated by others
- Provides specialized services, training and technical assistance to University faculty and staff
- Determines and assesses user fees for the major equipment operated by the Center
The Center for Informatics in Medicine
- Organizes and coordinates the computer-related instruction programs of the Medical school and Graduate School of Nursing
- Develops plans and programs necessary for the creation of an academic program in medical Informatics
- Maintains a center resource for the creation of computer-assisted educational tools including multimedia presentations and computer simulations of learning materials
- Develops and supports Systems for the readiness training and continuing education missions of the University to include: distance learning, telemedicine, teleconferencing, and Internet-based information and educational services
- Provides central oversight and record keeping for externally funded grants and contracts with the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for medical Informatics research and development, and to ensure that University interests are addressed and that DOD guidelines are appropriately followed
- Provides complete reference/information services
- Provides a full range of computer-based educational, research, and administrative materials, and guides library patrons in the use of these materials
- Supports the faculty in the development and delivery of microcomputer-based instructional and educational materials
The principal subdivisions of the Learning Resource Center are the Administration Division, Applied Medical Informatics Division, the Reference/Information Services Division, and the Technical Services Division.
The Multidisciplinary Laboratories
- Maintains and schedules the use of classroom and laboratory space
- Provides instructional support to the faculty, staff; and to the medical, graduate and nursing students
- Provides medical and graduate students with books, laboratory and clinical equipment, and other materials needed for their course of study
- Supports the classroom and laboratory teaching of the university's faculty by providing and maintaining the necessary space and equipment
- Provides a central area in which medical students perform their laboratory work
- Maintains anatomical material for medical, graduate and nursing student classes, research use, and surgical studies resident training, and GME courses
University Information Systems
- Provides information systems support to the University
- Operates and maintains a central main-frame computer that serves as the common arena for all University computer users
- Develops and implements University policy on the uses of computers in the University
- Works with software providers to modify basic systems for specific University needs
- Oversees the purchase, use, maintenance, repair, and final disposition of computer hardware throughout the University
- Obtains and oversees basic, long-distance, and cellular telephone services for the University
- Advises the President of the University, the Dean of the School of Medicine, and the faculty, staff, and students on the uses of computers in teaching, learning, research, and administration
- Trains University faculty, staff; and students in the use of the hardware and software that are available to the University
The principal subdivisions of the Office of University Information Systems include: The End-User Computing Division, the Operations Division, the Systems Development and Support Division, and the Telecommunications Division.
The Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine
- Provides a complete laboratory animal veterinary support program for the University
- Maintains the required laboratory documentation for the facility
- Advises and consults with investigators on the current and appropriate methodology relative to laboratory animals used in research and teaching
- Reviews research and teaching protocols and methodology to ensure compliance with current federal, Department of Defense, and University guidelines
- Instructs medical and graduate students, faculty, and staff on the requirements for use of laboratory animals, and health and safety as prescribed by law and regulation
The principal subdivisions of the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine are the Animal Husbandry Division, the Veterinary Medicine Division, the Veterinary Surgery Division, and Veterinary Pathology Division.
The Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Safety
- Insures that all hazardous materials used in research or teaching are used safely and disposed of properly;
- Develops, writes, and implements University policy related to environmental health and occupational safety
- Insures that radioactive materials used in research or teaching are used safely and in full compliance with the terms of the University's Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses;
The principal subdivisions of the Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Safety are the Bioenvironmental Engineering Division, the Occupational Medicine Division, and the Radiation Safety Division.
The Office of Continuing Education for Health Professionals
- Identifies educational needs, plans, implements, and evaluates continuing education and resuscitation medicine programs for members of the health professions serving in the uniformed services
- Maintains liaison with professional, educational, and academic organizations within the uniformed services, the Federal government, and the private sector
- Monitors the quality of continuing education activities and uses evaluation data and research findings to improve the quality of these University activities
- Provides administrative and logistical support, and determines budgetary requirements, for programs sponsored by the Office
- Establishes programs for non-DOD and non-Federal civilian health professionals in disciplines where the body of knowledge is available primarily within the uniformed services' medical community and in situations when such knowledge will contribute to the health of the Nation, other countries, or the global community
- Acquires and maintains continuing education accreditation status with continuing education accrediting bodies
