Integrated Anatomy-Physiology Curriculum
(Three Contiguous Course Modules during the MS-I Year)
Module 1: Introduction to Structure and Function
Description: Module 1 teaches first year medical students the fundamental concepts of structure and function that are most important to their understanding of disease processes. This curriculum combines:
- topics on Cell Biology with relevant segments of basic physiology
- the study of human basic tissue structure and function
- early embryogenesis and basic tissue formation.
- introduction of the medical student to anatomical and medical terminology
- teaching basic information on form, structure and function by dissection of the body and normal radiology
- correlation of the development of organ systems and the etiology of congenital abnormalities.
When Offered: Fall and Winter Quarters
Credit Hours: 10
Contact Hours: 154
Course Directors: Diane Borst and Alan Seyfer
Module 2: Clinical Head & Neck & Functional Neuroscience
Description: Module 2 integrates the basic and applied anatomy of the head and neck region with the microstructure and physiology of the special senses and functional neuroscience. This Module:
- stresses a core of basic science information of practical clinical value
- develops clinical reasoning skills by involving the students in problem-solving clinical case studies
When Offered: Winter Quarter
Credit Hours: 11
Contact Hours: 169
Course Director: David Mears
Module 3: Structure and Function of Organ Systems
Description: Module 3 builds on material from Module 1 correlating structure and function from the light-microscopic to the transmission-electron-microscopic level. This curriculum includes:
- Immunology
- The Cardiovascular System
- The Endocrine System
- The Urinary System
- The Respiratory System
- The Gastrointestinal System
When Offered: Spring Quarter
Credit Hours: 11
Contact Hours: 166
Course Director: Stephen Rothwell
Neuroanatomy Clerkship
Course #: ATR4110
Description: Provides opportunity for student to carry out integrated review of head & neck anatomy with functional neuroanatomy. Stresses practical application of anatomical knowledge in relation to clinical medicine. Allows independent cadaver dissection of head & neck region, study of gross brain, brain slices and kodachromes of CNS myelin-stained slides. Utilizes USU computer Module on head, neck and CNS anatomy.
When Offered: Fall and Winter Quarters
Credit Hours: 5
Course Director: Rosemary Borke
Gross Anatomy Clerkship
Course #: ATR4120
Description: Allows student to carry out detailed cadaver dissections of areas of interest. Periodic interaction with faculty supplements the dissection and provides opportunity for amplification of areas of interest and clarification of points of confusion.
When Offered: Fall and Winter Quarters
Credit Hours: 5
Course Directors: Alan Seyfer
